AI Audit

What is it?

AI Audit is a set of tools that gives website owners visibility and control over how AI bots crawl and use their content. As AI companies (OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Perplexity) increasingly train their models on web content, website owners face a new challenge: their content is being consumed by AI without their knowledge, consent, or compensation. AI Audit addresses this.

What problem does it solve?

The rise of AI has created a new class of web crawlers that operate very differently from traditional search engine bots:

  • Content consumption without attribution: AI models ingest website content to train on or to generate answers, often without linking back to the source.
  • No visibility: Website owners often don't know which AI bots are crawling their site, how often, or what content they're consuming.
  • Revenue impact: If an AI chatbot answers a user's question using your content, that user never visits your website — reducing your traffic, ad revenue, and engagement.
  • Consent: Many website owners want to allow some AI usage (to appear in AI search results) but restrict others (full training data ingestion). Current tools (robots.txt) are too blunt.

How does it work?

AI Audit provides three key capabilities:

  1. Visibility: See exactly which AI bots are crawling your site — which URLs, how frequently, and how much data they're consuming. This is built into Cloudflare's analytics.

  2. Control: Decide on a per-bot, per-section basis what AI crawlers can and cannot access. More granular than robots.txt — you can allow GPTBot to crawl your blog but block it from your premium content.

  3. Monetization (emerging): Cloudflare is building infrastructure for content owners to set terms for AI access — potentially including payment. This is the "AI monetization" aspect of Act 4.

Since Cloudflare sits between websites and the internet (handling ~20% of all web traffic), it's uniquely positioned to see and control AI bot traffic at scale.

Why it matters strategically

AI Audit represents a new market category that Cloudflare is pioneering. As the debate over AI training data and content licensing intensifies, website owners need tools to manage this new dynamic. Cloudflare's position as the internet's intermediary makes it the natural platform for this. It also creates a new revenue opportunity — Cloudflare could facilitate a marketplace where AI companies pay content owners for access, taking a fee for the transaction.
